T.E.R:R.A.I.N - Taranaki Educational Resource: Research, Analysis and Information Network

Taranaki Educational Resource: Research, Analysis and Information Network aims to provide open source software solutions to community groups who want to use Geographic Information Systems to analyse their data and display the maps on the www.

TERRAIN is a community project, based in Taranaki, supported by community groups and businesses, to improve the understanding of our environment and the ways we interact with it. The project fits with the principles of environmental sustainability and education developed by the Government of New Zealand, and was made possible through the Digital Strategy Fund “Community Partnership Fund 112” during the year 2008 - 2009. The Taranaki Regional Council provided the aerial photos.

Funding in 2010 from the George Mason Community Trust and TSB Bank Community Trust have allowed upgrades to the open-source software, new maps and a faster server.

Some of the participating community groups link their mapping service to a digital library of images, documents and film, called Kete, run by the National Library. Under access agreements the public use of the information will be allowed for non-profit purposes.

The community groups have maps and project details to view. The maps have been 'live' since 23rd June 2009. Please direct any comments or sugestions to our contact page
